What exactly is “purse power?” Well, according to wikipedia “The power of the purse is the ability of one group to manipulate and control the actions of another group by withholding funding, or putting stipulations on the use of funds.” It was a term used mostly by government agencies.
Now, purse power is about the power of women. Based on an article put out by the NY Post a year ago (http://www.nypost.com/p/news/opinion/opedcolumnists/item_7L8WYz8wpIe0M4zV5zELEI):
“It’s no secret that women have buying power. We already purchase roughly 85 percent of the goods and services in the United States, from clothes to cars. But that’s just been the warm-up. Women now control $12 trillion of the overall $18.4 trillion in global consumer spending,” and as a predicted 200 million additional females enter the global workforce over the next few years, that number’s just going to get bigger.”
…and that was a year ago! Women are being marketed to everywhere we go. We have the power to make or break a product. If the market (aka “you and me”) says it’s no good then it fails. Plain and simple. So how can we, as women, take this power and use it for good?
It’s at this time of year especially, when shopping is on everyone’s minds, that we can make a statement and use our purse power to really support the companies that we like and want to see succeed. So keep the idea of purse power in your head this holiday season and buy from companies that are doing something you like and believe in!
