Family Fridays is all about family! Whether it’s fun things to do, interesting facts, stories that make us laugh, cry and learn, if it has to do with family life this is where you’ll find it!
Well, it’s Christmas Eve. I still can’t believe that the year is almost over! Teagan and Mackenzie, my two daughters, have been counting down the days to Christmas, so excited about the presents that show up around the tree from family members all over the country. What I love most about this time of year, for us, is that it is so family centric. We’ve started our own little family traditions that become lasting memories for our kids.
This got me thinking about the idea of family traditions and how important it is to develop them – and not just around the holiday season, but all throughout the year.
Family traditions create a sense of belonging for your kids. It’s something that is special to your little clan and you alone. Kids really feel a sense of belonging when they take part in creating the traditions. It’s a great bonding experience for all involved.
Family traditions also create wonderful memories that your kids will grow up with and cherish into adulthood. They’ll probably even bring some of your traditions into their own families.
Family traditions are fun! You keep doing them every year (or month or week) because you enjoy them! If you have traditions that you really dread let them go! Don’t get caught in a state of “well, we’ve always done it like this…” If it’s not working for you cut it out and create a new one!
As I enjoy our Christmas Eve family traditions tonight of cooking a really nice meal, listening to Charlie Brown Christmas music, opening one small present! and having real quality time together, I’m also going to be thinking about how I can create new ones, big or small, in our day to day lives. Happy Holidays to all of you!
