It’s time to get selfish. That’s right, I said it. Not a natural reaction for most moms is it? As mothers we get very used to sacrifice. It’s normal, you want what is best for your kids, first and foremost. Me too. So what we do is bend over backwards making sure everyone is taken care of…but then what about us? There’s no time left in the day to focus on us and if there was, well…we’re just too tired to care. Sound familiar?
I’m here to tell you that it’s time to get a little selfish. Giving to yourself and nurturing yourself is the best way to be happy, healthy and quite frankly a better mom and wife. Believe me, as I write this I’m thinking “ok, Lisa, take your own advice!” I’ll be the first to admit that I often push, push, push and “get it all done”….but forget myself.
So I’m taking a pledge today, and I hope you take it with me, to start nurturing myself. That might mean that I take an hour out of an already busy day to get some exercise in. It might mean getting up a little earlier to have some “me time” before the house starts rockin. Perhaps it’s pampering myself after the kids go to bed with a bubble bath and a glass of wine (man, does that sound good!). Maybe it’s meditating, maybe it’s watching a show on tv (one that I want to watch!), maybe it’s doing something artistic, maybe it’s writing, sewing, etc… You get the idea, it’s about doing something that YOU enjoy. Something that regenerates you and makes you feel good. That’s the key. If it drains you then it’s not helping to create a happier and healthier you.
Take a little time out for you… interruptions will happen…
Just get back on track and most of all…laugh!
Doctors tell us, coaches tell us, and Oprah screams it from the rooftops! It’s time to start listening fellow Mamas! Let’s start taking care of us so we can be even better at taking care of those precious ones around us.
